Pitchers who routinely cross 100 pitches are better outs-recorded-over candidates than those who get pulled at 85 regardless of performance.
Earned runs allowed rounds out the core pitcher prop menu. Lines are usually set at 2.5 or 3.5, with the juice on each side indicating where the market believes the outcome falls. Earned runs props are the most volatile of the three because a single bad inning can blow through the line – a pitcher can cruise through five scoreless innings, give up a four-run sixth, and bust the over in a span of fifteen pitches. I trade earned runs props less frequently than strikeouts or outs recorded because the variance is harder to model, but when a clear mismatch exists between a dominant pitcher and a weak lineup, the under on earned runs can offer strong value.
Using Sabermetrics to Find Pitcher Prop Value
If you are not using sabermetric data to inform your pitcher prop bets, you are bringing a feeling to a statistics fight. Here is the core framework I use, stripped down to the metrics that matter most.
For strikeout overs, I start with Swinging Strike Rate (SwStr%). This measures the percentage of total pitches that result in a swing and miss. League average sits around 11%. A pitcher consistently above 13% is a strikeout machine regardless of what his raw K/9 says. The beauty of SwStr% is that it stabilises over a smaller sample than K/9 – roughly 200 pitches versus 60 innings – which makes it a better early-season indicator.
Expected ERA (xERA) and Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) are the workhorses for earned runs props. Both metrics strip out the influence of the defence and isolate what the pitcher controls: strikeouts, walks, and home runs. A pitcher with a 4.50 ERA but a 3.20 FIP is almost certainly pitching better than his results suggest, and the earned runs line – which is set off the actual ERA – will be too high. That gap between ERA and FIP is where value hides.
For outs recorded, I look at Pitches Per Inning (P/IP) and the manager’s historical hook point. A pitcher averaging 16 pitches per inning will reach 96 pitches after six innings – right at the modern threshold where most managers consider a pull. If the bullpen is rested and the game is close, that pitcher is likely getting the hook. If the bullpen is taxed from a doubleheader or extra-innings game the day before, the starter might get a longer leash. Monitoring bullpen usage across the series is essential context that most prop bettors ignore.
One last principle: always check the opposing lineup card, not just the team-level statistics. Late scratches, rest days for key hitters, and platoon matchups can shift a pitcher’s expected strikeout total by a full unit. A lineup missing its two best left-handed hitters against a left-handed starter is a fundamentally different matchup than the same team at full strength. The sportsbook adjusts the game line quickly for lineup changes; prop lines move slower.
Which Crypto Platforms Offer the Deepest Pitcher Prop Markets
